  • Shiatsu: Originating in Japan, Shiatsu translates to “finger pressure.” It’s a type of massage where the therapist uses fingers, thumbs, and palms (and sometimes feet, elbows, and knees) to apply pressure to specific points along the body’s meridians (energy pathways). The goal is to improve the flow of qi (vital energy) and promote healing. Shiatsu is often performed on a mat on the floor and doesn’t always involve oils. It can be both relaxing and invigorating.

  • Deep Tissue Massage: This type of massage targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. It uses slower strokes and more intense pressure than a Swedish massage. Deep tissue massage is often used to address chronic pain, muscle tightness, and injuries. It’s important to communicate with your therapist about the pressure level, as it can sometimes be uncomfortable.

  • Aromatherapy Massage: This combines the benefits of massage with the therapeutic properties of essential oils. The therapist will typically add a few drops of essential oil to the massage oil. Different oils have different effects; some are relaxing, some are energizing, and others can help with specific conditions. Aromatherapy massage can be a very relaxing and sensory experience.

  • Reflexology: This focuses on specific points on the feet, hands, and ears that are believed to correspond to different organs and systems in the body. By applying pressure to these reflex points, reflexologists aim to promote relaxation, improve circulation, and enhance the body’s natural healing abilities. It’s a gentle but effective technique.

  • Mud Treatment: This isn’t strictly a massage, but it’s often offered in spas alongside massage therapies. It involves applying mineral-rich mud to the body. The mud is believed to have detoxifying and therapeutic properties, helping to draw out impurities and soothe aches and pains. After the mud is applied, you’ll typically relax while it dries, and then it’s rinsed off. Sometimes a light massage is incorporated after the mud treatment.
