Avenida México Opens After One Year
A newly opened section of avenida México now runs between calle Argentina and calle 31 de Octubre, in front of Parque Hidalgo. The municipal government delivered the modernization under a two-month pilot plan, with the stated purpose of unifying avenida México with cultural spaces. Puerto Vallarta Mayor Luis Ernesto Munguía González led the official opening ceremony on Wednesday. The works lasted one year, and an area was designated for taxi parking.
The opening did not settle how the roadway will operate. Locatarios questioned Munguía about whether the section would be for pedestrian or vehicle use, and the Ayuntamiento had not yet defined the street’s operating rules despite the completion of the work. Munguía did not present a definitive proposal. One possibility he raised was setting specific days and times for both pedestrian and vehicle traffic. The municipal president asked the locatarios for 10 days to make a decision, said the issue would be addressed directly with them, and said the Ayuntamiento would seek a consensus with them about the roadway’s use.
The dispute follows concerns raised before construction began. The locatarios initially opposed the project and expressed concern about possible economic impacts from obstructions and difficulties accessing their establishments. During the opening, merchants expressed dissatisfaction with how long the works took. They said there was still a lack of spaces for loading and supplying their businesses, and that they faced difficulties finding spaces to park and unload merchandise.
The locatarios later agreed to continue after reaching an agreement with the Ayuntamiento. That agreement included financial support of 30,000 pesos for each locatario.
Visitors can locate the modernized stretch between Argentina and 31 de Octubre, in front of Parque Hidalgo, while the municipality and locatarios work through the street-use decision.
