Conchas Chinas swimmer rescued after losing consciousness

The emergency occurred Tuesday afternoon near Easy street at Conchas Chinas beach, where a man became unconscious while snorkeling in the water. Lifeguard personnel in the area intervened to assist the swimmer. A lifeguard deployed in the aquatic sector immediately responded after the call for help, removed the man from the waves and brought him to safety on the sandy shore.

A Civil Protection worker was watching the man and entered the water to retrieve him after seeing him submerge and not immediately resurface. A family friend also entered the water to check his condition after noticing that he was not moving. The man’s companions initially assumed that he was swimming passively, and they said he did not respond to calls and was unconscious. His companions also said they saw him floating motionless approximately five minutes after he entered the sea.

Municipal police officers arrived in unit PV-554 after receiving an alert from the computer center about a person drowning. At the scene, police officers interviewed the victim’s wife, who was identified as Gustavo Arellano Armas. A 60-year-old man was rescued by lifeguards from Protección Civil and Bomberos de Puerto Vallarta. Civil Protection and Firefighters personnel provided him with prehospital care and stabilized his vital signs before transferring him to the ISSSTE clinic. The swimmer was said to have suffered a decompensation related to physical exertion. The aquatic rescue and the emergency services’ rapid mobilization prevented a fatal tragedy. For beachgoers, Civil Protection authorities reiterated the importance of following safety notices and the flag code on the coast. Following the recommendations of rescue personnel is essential because underwater currents and sudden changes in waves pose a latent danger to swimmers even when the sea surface appears calm.
