Amado Nervo Bridge nears opening as access works continue

The Puente Amado Nervo crosses the Ameca River and connects the metropolitan area of Bahía de Banderas, Nayarit, with Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco.

Reports differ on the project’s construction status: one says the bridge has been completed, while another says construction is 90 percent complete.

The bridge is expected to be 800 meters long and 24 meters wide. It has 20 spans of 40 meters each and 21 pile-column supports.

The bridge is intended to function as an alternate route between the two municipalities and to reduce traffic congestion.

Reports also differ on the possible time savings: officials estimate that commuters could save nearly 30 minutes each day, while another report puts the possible travel-time reduction at up to 25 minutes.

The project represented an investment of 704 million pesos and generated 2,790 jobs during construction.

The bridge is expected to benefit more than 500,000 people who live, work, study, or travel between the two municipalities.

Complementary works on both the Nayarit and Jalisco sides have not yet been completed, and repair work on the roadway on the Bahía de Banderas side is still pending.

Access works in Bahía de Banderas are continuing to connect the infrastructure with San Vicente, Mezcales, Valle Dorado, and San José del Valle.

Traffic has not been fully restored, and the roadway connecting Puerto Vallarta with Bahía de Banderas remains closed to traffic at this point.

Motorists must take precautions and consider alternate routes.

On the Puerto Vallarta side, complementary construction is scheduled to continue through June 2027.

The widening of Amado Nervo Avenue includes infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists.

The bridge was previously identified as Puente Federación.

At the end of December 2024, Nayarit Governor Miguel Ángel Navarro Quintero proposed to President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo that the infrastructure be named after the Nayarit poet Amado Nervo.

Puerto Vallarta approved changing avenida Federación to avenida Amado Nervo on September 1.

The change is part of the standardization process related to the bridge’s name.

The road leading to the bridge still retains the name Federación on the Bahía de Banderas side.

The Amado Nervo Bridge is expected to open in November 2026, but its inauguration is awaiting the Government of Mexico’s schedule.
