Profepa closed a nearly finished public beach-access project in Lo de Marcos on Tuesday, October 6. The closure notice was placed at the entrance to the construction site, and activist José Barraza documented it with photographs.

The project is on Aquiles Serdán street at one of the town’s public windows to the sea. It includes two walls serving as access pillars to the window and the construction of bathrooms. The work was carried out by the municipal government as part of efforts to beautify and preserve the town’s public-access spaces, and the project’s investment exceeds 5 million pesos.

The project is practically completed, but the closure takes place amid controversies in Lo de Marcos over the windows to the sea. These public-access spaces have been the subject of discussion between residents and authorities, and the project itself has generated controversy among residents.

Residents say the project was initially planned for Del Bosque street and was later moved to Aquiles Serdán street, where construction eventually began. Residents also say a project of this kind was more necessary on Del Bosque street, where there are problems related to water runoff during the rainy season.

At the time of publication, neither Profepa nor the Bahía de Banderas Government had officially reported the reason for the closure or explained what irregularity might have led to the placement of the seals. The two authorities are expected to clarify whether the project incurred an irregularity related to the federal maritime-terrestrial zone, known as Zofemat, or the permits required for construction. They are also expected to report the reasons for the closure in the coming hours.
