Jalisco forecasts strong storms through October 9
A week of strong and very strong storms is forecast for much of Jalisco, including Costa Norte, where Puerto Vallarta is located.
The forecast period runs from Monday, October 5, through Friday, October 9. Maximum temperatures are expected to range from 28 to 32 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures will range from 13 to 16 degrees Celsius. The indicated regions are expected to have frequent lightning and wind gusts greater than 35 kilometers per hour.
For Costa Norte, critical rain periods are expected on Monday in the afternoon and at night. On Tuesday, the critical periods are expected in the early morning, afternoon, and at night. The same pattern is forecast for Wednesday, while Thursday’s critical periods are expected in the afternoon and at night. On Friday, critical rain periods are expected in the early morning, afternoon, and at night.
The greatest potential for storms is expected in the afternoon and at night. The probability of strong to very strong rain in the indicated regions is 75 to 85 percent. Along the coast, waves are expected to measure between 1.4 and 1.8 meters across much of the coastline.
The forecast also covers Costa Sur, Sierra Occidental, Sierra de Amula, Sur, Sureste, Centro, including the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, Lagunas, and Ciénega. In the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, moderate to strong storms are forecast during the afternoon and evening throughout the week, with wind gusts greater than 45 kilometers per hour.
A tropical depression is forecast to form off the Gulf of Tehuantepec, and the tropical disturbance there is expected to continue developing. CONAGUA updated the system’s probability of cyclonic development in 48 hours to 70 percent on Monday and maintains a 90 percent probability at seven days. The published notice stated a 60 percent probability at two days and 90 percent at seven days for the tropical disturbance. It could move near the coasts of Jalisco toward Friday or the weekend.
During episodes of intense rain, the agency recommends staying in a safe place, avoiding flooded areas, and not crossing streams. It also asked the public to stay informed through Jalisco Alerta and the official social media accounts of the Unidad Estatal de Protección Civil y Bomberos Jalisco.
