Talpa de Allende, Puerto Vallarta
Talpa de Allende

Surrounded by pine covered mountains, Talpa de Allende, another silver mining town, founded by the Spanish in 1599, has a population of about 10,500 - including 9 gringos, is an important religious site in Mexico. There are 3 pilgrimages a year to see the Virgin "Rosario of Talpa", a small statue that is said to have healing powers, On these occasions the town's population triples.
At over 4,000 feet the climate is wonderful and the town, which is scrupulously clean, has several hotels and restaurants. I was also told that there is a 'geothermic steam bath house' in town. Many stores sell the famous Guava Roll and tiny articles, like sombreros and sandals made out of chewing gum. This is not sweet gum, it is derived from the Chitle tree which grows locally. Now you know where the word "Chiclets" come from.

The view at the top of the page, of the valley, was taken from Hacienda Jacarandas, which is a beautiful Bed & Breakfast run by long time residents Bill and Guy, see below.
The town is also surrounded by ranches and the main topic of conversation is... you guessed it.. Horses
If your Spanish is good, you will find it easy to rent horses to explore the valley and nearby there are many nice waterfalls to visit.
There is now a Cyber Cafe in town but you'll find it hard to see a tourist. So a very clean, laid back and quiet town awaits your visit.

Two Blue Line busses at 8:30Am and 4:30PM leave from behind Plaza Las Glorias, blue on the MAP. You can purchase your ticket there or purchase the tickets at least one day in advance at this small store in downtown that sells the tickets, finding it is another challenge!Above Parque Hidalgo is a church, if you walk up the street to the left of it for one block and a third, you come to a side street, across from you on that street you will see a small store, just one door, and on it a sign saying they sell tickets to Mascota & Talpa de Allende. See photo at the right..

You can also drive there yourself, the new road and bridge make it an easy two and a half to three hour trip.
